Eye For Trends
I don't have an off switch when it comes to identifying new and up-and-coming trends. Even my daily activities usually involve some event where I am people watching.
It’s impossible to rely solely on numbers for your insights! You must venture out and experience the world firsthand to understand what motivates people.I usually find myself among fans who discover new things early on. I attribute this to my persistent quest for novelty and my natural curiosity.
Back in 2018, I noticed an upswing in country music and alternative country, with artists like Tyler Childers and Sturgill Simpson significantly influencing a plethora of younger musician. I felt drawn to these performances and was able to jump on trends before country western completely dominated the cultural landscape. When I attend shows, the primary thing I focus on is observing what people are wearing. Typically, after a show, I search for information on the brands or styles I noticed to determine if they’re worth following. In previous positions, I would present data in PowerPoints to ensure that upper management recognized the latest trends.
Travel: The internet has made the world feel incredibly small. I believe that traveling and experiencing different cultures allows one to stay ahead of trends that might take years to appear in the US. I’ve been particularly interested in blind boxes and gachapon balls, which have been a focal point of my research since they became popular in countries like Japan. I leveraged my network to gain insights into trends, managing to introduce products 3-6 months ahead of my competitors. Recently, I traveled to Japan and was utterly captivated by its culture and art. I promptly created a PowerPoint for my prior position highlighting the current trends I observed, including products and marketing strategies. From my last trip to Japan, I was able to contribute to a 30% increase in sales based on my research.
Markets: I enjoy investing my time in engaging with local businesses. Keeping my finger on the pulse of my local area has provided me an advantage in staying ahead of emerging trends.
Conventions: I try to keep my eyes open for any convention around my area. In any role I am in I want to make sure we are attending any conventions that would benefit us.
